AIOU Assignment Format 2026: Official Requirements and Recommended Layout
Preparing an AIOU assignment is not only about writing a long answer. Students must understand the question, follow the instructions issued for their programme, present the answer clearly and submit it through the correct channel before the applicable deadline.
For several higher-education programmes—including PGD, AD, BS, B.Ed, MA/MSc and M.Ed—AIOU’s general instructions state that assignments should be typed and uploaded in Word or PDF format. The same instructions say that handwritten scanned assignments are not acceptable for these programme groups. Requirements may differ for Certificate, SSC, HSSC and BA students, so every student should read the instructions printed with the current assignment question paper before preparing a submission.
Quick answer: A well-prepared AIOU assignment should include accurate student and course information, clearly numbered questions, relevant and original answers, logical headings, appropriate references and a readable file submitted according to the current programme instructions.

This guide explains publicly available instructions and offers practical formatting recommendations. Your current question paper, LMS notice and official AIOU sources take priority whenever requirements differ.
What are the official AIOU assignment instructions?
For PGD, AD, BS, B.Ed, MA/MSc and M.Ed programmes, the general AIOU instructions currently state that:
All questions are compulsory and normally carry equal marks, although marks within an individual question may be distributed according to its parts. Students should read each question carefully and respond according to its requirements. Handwritten scanned assignments are not acceptable for the listed programme group. Typed assignments should be uploaded in Word or PDF format on or before the deadline. Late assignments cannot be uploaded through the LMS. Students’ own analysis and synthesis are appreciated. Irrelevant discussion and direct reproduction from books, study guides or related material should be avoided.
For Certificate, SSC, HSSC and BA programmes, the same official document provides a separate set of instructions. It emphasizes answering all questions, following each question’s requirements, submitting on time, using original analysis and avoiding irrelevant or copied material. Because the wording differs between programme groups, students should not assume that one submission method applies to every AIOU programme.
The official AIOU assignment area also publishes programme-based question papers, covering forms and writing instructions for current semesters.
Recommended AIOU assignment layout in Word
A simple assignment file can follow this order:
Cover page Assignment and course information Question 1 followed by its answer Question 2 followed by its answer Remaining questions in numerical order References Appendices, only where relevant
Avoid unnecessary certificates, decorative borders, colourful pages or unrelated images unless the course specifically requires them.
What should be included on the cover page?
A practical cover page may include:
University name Programme name Course title Course code Assignment number Semester and year Student name Registration or roll number Tutor name, when required Regional campus or study centre, when required Submission date
Check whether your current assignment package provides an official covering form. AIOU maintains an assignment covering form among its assignment resources.
Example cover-page details ALLAMA IQBAL OPEN UNIVERSITY, ISLAMABAD
Programme: B.Ed Course Title: [Course title] Course Code: [Course code] Assignment Number: 1 Semester: Spring 2026
Student Name: [Your name] Registration Number: [Your registration number] Tutor Name: [Tutor name, where required] Regional Campus: [Campus]
Use the current semester and your actual course information. Do not copy another student’s registration number, tutor details or course code.
A practical structure for each answer
The structure should follow the question, but the following framework works for many descriptive and discussion-based assignments.
1. Introduction
Briefly introduce the topic and explain what the answer will cover.
2. Definition or background
Define the central concept using clear language. Add context only where it helps answer the question.
3. Main discussion
Divide the answer into logical headings. Each section should address one clear point.
A strong paragraph normally contains:
A main idea An explanation Relevant evidence or course concept An example A connection back to the question
4. Analysis or application
Apply the concept to education, society, classroom practice or another context relevant to the course.
5. Conclusion
Summarize the answer without introducing a completely new argument.
6. References
List the sources actually used.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one official AIOU assignment format for every programme?
No. General instructions and submission methods can differ between programme groups, departments, courses and semesters. Always check the instructions included with the current question paper.
Are handwritten AIOU assignments accepted in 2026?
For the general PGD, AD, BS, B.Ed, MA/MSc and M.Ed instruction group, handwritten scanned assignments are stated as unacceptable and typed Word or PDF files are required. Other programme groups should follow their own current instructions.
Which font should I use for an AIOU assignment?
The general official instruction sheet reviewed for this guide does not prescribe one universal font. Times New Roman, Arial or Calibri at 11–12 points are practical, readable choices unless the department specifies something different.
Should an AIOU assignment be submitted in Word or PDF?
The general instructions for PGD, AD, BS, B.Ed, MA/MSc and M.Ed allow typed assignments in Word or PDF format. Follow the exact instruction shown with your current course assignment.
Can I copy material from the AIOU course book?
The course book can be used for learning and reference, but reproducing material word for word is discouraged. Explain concepts in your own language, add analysis and cite the material used.
Where can I check AIOU assignment dates?
Use the official AIOU Assignment Schedule page and select the schedule for your programme. Dates can change, so avoid relying solely on screenshots or unofficial social-media posts.
What happens if an assignment is submitted late?
For the higher-education programme group covered by the official general instructions, late assignments cannot be uploaded through the LMS. Students should therefore submit before the applicable deadline.
